Overview of Mythology

FourLing

In ancient Chinese mythology, the FourLing (the Azure Dragon 、 White Tiger 、 Vermilion Bird and Black Tortoise) are revered as divine beasts endowed with mystical powers, each guarding one of the four cardinal directions of the celestial palace: east, west, south, and north.

Azure Dragon: Originating from ancient astral worship, the Azure Dragon represents Taihao and the Seven Eastern Constellations . The east is associated with the color azure , the wood element, and the season of spring. Its name derives from these associations. The Azure Dragon has a serpentine body, a kirin-like head, a carp’s tail, long whiskers, deer-like antlers, and five claws, presenting a majestic appearance. In ancient times, dragons were considered supreme beings, and thus the Azure Dragon possesses the power to bestow unparalleled authority and boundless wealth.

White Tiger: Similarly rooted in ancient astral worship, the White Tiger symbolizes Shaohao and the Seven Western Constellations . The west is linked to the color white, the metal element, and autumn. As the god of war and slaughter, the White Tiger is depicted with pure golden-white fur, free of blemishes. It is believed to grant blessings such as harmonious marriages, radiant beauty, and irresistible charm.

Vermilion Bird: The Vermilion Bird originates from ancient astral worship and represents Emperor Yan and the Seven Southern Constellations . The south corresponds to the color red, the fire element, and summer. Resembling a bird, it symbolizes happiness and is often associated with solar worship in ancient myths. The Vermilion Bird is said to bestow family well-being, prosperity, and enhanced wisdom.

Black Tortoise: Also known as the “Tortoise-Snake,” the Black Tortoise embodies Zhuanxu and the Seven Northern Constellations . The north is tied to the color black, the water element, and winter. This hybrid creature, combining a tortoise and a snake, represents longevity. It is revered for its abilities to bring peace, ward off illnesses, and promote health.

The FourLing were worshipped by ancient humans as mighty and divine beings, their origins deeply connected to primitive astral veneration. In ancient Chinese culture, they were honored as the “Four Celestial Spirits”, revered for their powers to expel evil, avert disasters, and invoke blessings. Symbolizing the four cardinal directions, they embody the ideals of protection and the dispelling of misfortune.
